Hearing Support Team

Our Qualified Teachers of the Deaf (ToD) support any child or young person (0-19) with a significant hearing impairment that requires hearing aids. Children or young people have been diagnosed as having a hearing loss by an audiologist. The level of involvement from the team will vary according to the child or young person’s hearing condition.

We offer guidance, advice and support to schools and families in order to maximise opportunities for learning and inclusion so that children and young people with a hearing impairment can achieve their potential.

Individualised programmes, specialist teaching and support from Specialist Teaching Assistants is given, appropriate to children’s need, as part of a graduated approach to ensure inclusion in school and the community and to support social and emotional wellbeing.

We work with babies, children and young people with a diagnosed hearing impairment. This includes children with additional special educational needs and disabilities.

Getting a diagnosis is the first step to the right support.

If you’re worried about your child’s hearing, you need to get their hearing checked.

Your GP can send you to a children’s hearing specialist who will undertake tests to find out what the issue is.
