Hearing Specialist Team

Our Qualified Teachers of the Deaf (ToD) support babies, children and young people from birth to 19 years old who have a significant hearing loss. An audiologist (a healthcare professional who checks hearing and hearing loss) diagnoses hearing loss. The support we provide depends on the child or young person's hearing needs.

We give advice, guidance and support to families, carers and schools. We help children and young people with hearing loss take part in learning and all areas of school life. We want every child and young person to reach their full potential.

We provide individual support, specialist teaching and support from Specialist Teaching Assistants when needed. The support a child or young person receives is based on their individual needs. We use a graduated approach. This means we regularly review a child or young person's needs and increase support if needed. This helps them take part in school and community activities. It also supports their social and emotional wellbeing.

We work with babies, children and young people who have a diagnosed hearing loss. This includes children and young people who also have additional Special Educational Needs and Disabilities (SEND).

Getting a diagnosis is the first step in getting the right support. If you are concerned about your child's hearing, ask for their hearing to be checked. Your General Practitioner (GP), also known as your family doctor, can refer your child to a children's hearing specialist for hearing tests.
