Life At School

Many siblings find school difficult at times because of things happening at home. Friends and teachers may not understand what life is like for you. Here are some common challenges and ideas that may help.

People are mean because my brother is different

Siblings say that people sometimes make unkind comments about their brother or sister. This may be because they look or behave differently. It is upsetting even when people are being mean because they do not understand.

Some things you can do

  • Talk to a parent or teacher if someone is being mean about your brother or sister.

  • Walk away if people are trying to upset you.

  • Ask if you can talk to your class about your brother or sister and what makes them special to you.

I can’t get homework done

Siblings say homework can be difficult because there is a lot going on at home. They may be interrupted or may need to help care for their brother or sister. This can be very challenging.

Some things you can do

  • Ask your parent to help you find a quiet place to work.

  • Tell your teachers if things at home are making homework difficult.

  • Ask your parent if you can sometimes do your homework at a friend’s house.

My teacher doesn’t understand

(Suggested alternative: When school staff don’t see what life is like for you)

Some siblings say teachers do not understand what life is like for them. They may get into trouble for being late, missing lessons or forgetting things. This can feel unfair and upsetting. Teachers need to understand your situation.

Some things you can do

  • Ask your teacher for extra time to finish homework.

  • Ask your teacher if you can check in at home when something is worrying you.

  • Ask your parent to explain your home situation to your teacher.

  • YoungSibs can send information to your teacher if they want to understand sibling issues better.

I’m tired in class

Many siblings say they get woken up at night by their disabled brother or sister, or by their parents giving care. Sleep is important for your health, learning and energy.

Some things you can do

  • Tell your parent that you are being disturbed at night.

  • Ask if things like nappies or equipment can be kept in another room.

  • Ask your parent to tell your teacher about your sleep being affected.

Sometimes I get bullied

Some siblings say they are bullied because of their brother or sister. This is frightening and stressful. Bullying can happen to anyone. It is always wrong. The most important thing is to get help.

Some things you can do

  • Ask a parent, teacher or trusted adult to help stop the bullying. Write down what the bully has said or done and show it to them.

  • Ignore hurtful comments if you can and walk away.

  • If you are bullied online, take screenshots and show them to a parent or teacher.

  • You can contact Childline at any time if you need support.
