Adventure, Achievement, and Inclusion: Gateway Award Returns to Wirral Mencap This September

Four individuals wearing life jackets are seated on a boat traveling along a canal. The canal is bordered by grassy banks and trees, with other boats visible in the background. The sky is partly cloudy.

Wirral Mencap is providing a great opportunity for adults with SEND this autumn with the return of the Gateway Award.

The award is a unique personal development programme tailored for people with a learning disability. Starting Thursday, 4th September 2025 at the Wirral Mencap Office in Birkenhead, the Bronze Level Award offers a year-long journey of growth, independence, and community connection.

With a similar structure to the Duke of Edinburgh Award, the Gateway Award is more than just a weekly session—it’s a life-enhancing experience.

“The Gateway Award is about building confidence, making friends, and discovering new abilities,” said a spokesperson from Wirral Mencap. “It’s a celebration of what people can do.”

A Year of Meaningful Activities

There are a diverse range of activities to take part in, including hobbies, fitness and volunteering.

Participants receive a certificate and a medal when they complete each level.

Each session is designed to be inclusive, supportive, and fun—encouraging participants to step outside their comfort zones and try something new.

Practical Information

Participants should come prepared for all weather conditions and bring a packed lunch, drinks, and any travel passes they may have. Most sessions will involve time out in the community, and public transport will be used wherever possible.

The cost of the programme is £52 per day, covering staffing, activities, and travel during sessions. A one-off £21 fee also applies to cover materials, certificates, and membership. Funding may be available through Wirral Council, and Wirral Mencap encourages families to contact their social worker or Tina, Information and Advice Manager at Mencap, at 0151 666 1829 for support.

“We want everyone to have the chance to take part,” said the team. “If you’re unsure about funding, just ask—we’re here to help.”
