From Supported Intern to Apprentice
Congratulations to all pupils in Wirral receiving their GCSE results today!
Many of you might already have a plan in place. This could be A Levels, entering the world of work or other opportunities. But if you’re still not sure what your next steps are…
Meet Robbie
Robbie started his journey at Wirral Council in December 2024 as a Supported Intern. Fast forward eight months and Robbie is just about to start his Business Administration Apprenticeship with Wirral Council’s Children’s Services.
Robbie said: “The supported internship programme has been very good in helping me develop skills and understand the work a lot better. My confidence has really improved, and I’ve learnt a lot of new media and IT skills.”
The aim of supported internships is to support young people with Education, Health and Care (EHC) plans to gain paid employment by:
helping them to develop valuable employment skills
enabling them to demonstrate and grow their skills in the workplace
giving them confidence in their own abilities
“I was really made up when I was offered the apprenticeship,” added Robbie. “I’m excited for the future.”
It has certainly been Robbie’s year to shine as he also recently won the Student of the Year accolade at Wirral Met College’s annual award ceremony at the Floral Pavilion.
“It was a really nice surprise when I found out. Knowing that my achievements throughout the year in college and in my placement led me to get an award was amazing.
“I’m looking forward to getting started on my apprenticeship in September and to helping the community. That’s always something I’ve wanted to do.”
Supported Internships are a great option for those looking to learn new skills and gain work experience. You get the best of both worlds by getting the college experience whilst also gaining fantastic employability skills in your workplace.
Whatever your next step is, we wish all Wirral students the best of luck for the future.
