Wirral Home and Continuing Education Service
Wirral Home and Continuing Education Service is a short-term education service. We support children and young people who cannot go to their usual school. because of physical or mental health needs. Our goal is to help each child take the next step in their learning journey.
We offer a calm and caring space where children feel safe and supported. We help them stay healthy, build trust, and grow in confidence.
Our team includes experienced teachers for both primary and secondary age groups. We also have teaching assistants and learning mentors who give extra help.
We work with children who need support on social, emotional, mental health and physical needs. Our aim is to help them learn as much as they can and return to their school or move to a new provision when they are ready.
Meet Jolene
Jolene is our therapy dog. She is gentle and friendly and she helps children feel calm and cared for.
Jolene is part of our team. She supports children through quiet time, play, and companionship. This helps improve their emotional and mental wellbeing and brings a lot of joy to our pupils.
Where Your Child Will Learn
The Service is now based at Joseph Paxton Campus. It has two large areas which split into classrooms and breakout areas for young people to relax and socialise.
The rooms have tables and seats that can be moved. Different young people may need different layouts to help them feel comfortable.
Here are some of our rooms and our studio, used for Art and Design.
How Your Child Will Learn
We offer different learning pathways to suit each child’s needs. Children can learn in small groups or one-to-one sessions.
Subject wise, in the base, depending on pupil need we offer the :
Academic Pathway
For young people who are doing well with schoolwork and are working towards exams like GCSEs.Supported Pathway
For young people who find exams hard and learn better in a more relaxed way.Nurture Pathway
For young people who need extra help and support from a small, caring team
If a child is too unwell to attend group sessions, we offer one-to-one teaching at our base or in their home.
We teach children of all ages. Subjects include:

Admissions
The national guidance asks for dual referral which consists of some medical supportive evidence from an appropriate medical practitioner and a school referral. There is a panel every other month when referrals are looked at. All new educational packages start with a home visit. Pupils remain on the roll of their own school.
The first 12 weeks of tuition are paid for by the services’ budget after that the school pay for the pupil’s place.
Our Policies
Our Policies are being reviewed. We will let you know when the new policies are available.
