Shining a spotlight on some of the teams in Wirral offering support for children and young people with learning disabilities.

Meet Wirral Council’s Wirral Autism Learning Disabilities Keyworkers (WALK) team:

Funded by NHS England, WALK work with children, young people and adults (from 0-25 years old) who have a diagnosis of learning disability and/or autism with the most complex needs. They help those at risk of hospital admission or have already been admitted. WALK works together with families and the services already in place to ensure that they get the right support and can reduce or avoid hospital admission. They also help children and young adults make sense of the systems in place to support them, making sure that they have input into any plans for their care and that their voice is heard!

Wirral’s Children with Disabilities Service:

The Wirral Children with Disabilities Service supports children with disabilities to access support and services that will enhance their quality of life and help them to thrive. It forms part of the wider Wirral All Age Disability Service. The service supports children and young people with the following conditions:

• A severe or profound learning disability

• A severe physical disability

• A substantial degree of visual impairment/moderate and severe hearing loss

• A complex Autistic Spectrum Condition with severe learning difficulty

• A complex medical health condition
