A Gentle, Multi‑Sensory Theatre Experience for Young People with PMLD
A new theatre show, The Ancient Oak of Baldor, is coming to Wirral. It has been made especially for young people with profound and multiple learning disabilities (PMLD). The guidance age is 13+ as there are themes of loss and grief. Younger children are able to attend. It is created by Frozen Light, a company well known for their sensory shows designed for audiences with high support needs.
What the Story Is About
The play tells a gentle folk tale set in the Forest of Baldor. A huge ancient oak tree stands at its centre and has been there for thousands of years. On the day of a special celebration, a young woman called Elspeth sets out on a journey when someone she loves does not return home.
The heart of the story is about love, connection, and care - themes that many families will recognise.
A Multi‑Sensory Experience
Frozen Light specialise in creating theatre for audiences with PMLD. This means the show includes:
Sounds and music
Textures to touch
Lights and gentle visual moments
Smells and sensory objects
These elements help the audience take part in the action in a calm and safe way. The aim is to make everyone feel welcome and included.
What to Expect on the Day
The theatre provides a Visual Story to help prepare for the visit. This is a simple guide with photos of the space, staff, and what will happen during the show. It can help reduce anxiety and support planning ahead. [floralpavilion.com]
Staff understand the needs of young people with PMLD. You can arrive early, bring comfort items, or take breaks if needed. The environment is relaxed, and audience members are free to move, make noise, or respond in their own way.
Why This Show Matters
Families often tell us that accessible arts experiences are hard to find. Frozen Light create theatre with audiences who have PMLD, not just for them. Their work offers:
A safe space to enjoy culture together
A shared experience for families, carers, and young people
A chance to connect with others in a friendly setting
The story also celebrates ideas many carers value—love, belonging, and being seen.
How to Book
The show will be performed at the Floral Pavilion from 18–20 March 2026, with relaxed performances at 11:00am and 1:30pm. The show lasts about 60 minutes, and you can book up to two companion or carer tickets at no extra cost. You can book tickets on the Floral Pavilion website.
